My first thought after reading Our Lord’s parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) is to think of the many ways which I’ve squandered my time and talents in the past through laziness or neglect. Perhaps its the same for you? But, this is the wrong response to the parable. We remember that God reveals himself to Abraham as Yahweh (I AM, or I AM who AM). God’s omniscience and omnipotence tell us that to him everything is in the present. When we turn to God we enter into his moment, his present. The proper response, then, to the parable of the talents is to think how we can serve and be with God now. If we look to our past let it be to thank God for what he’s given us or to repent. When we look to our future, let us hope that we will always be in God’s present!
