Our sanctification is essentially a divine action. This is what we pray in the Psalm response at Mass today: “Create a clean heart in me, O God” (Psalm 51:12). As a result of original sin and our own folly, none of us is as holy or complete as we ought to be. Even if we strive hard to cultivate good habits and human virtues, we won’t have our hearts cleansed unless we turn to God. This requires confession and the profound sort of prayer whereby Christ prays in us, so that our prayers are rooted more in our hearts than in our minds. When this happens—when we allow Christ’s grace to touch our hearts—we are cleansed and made ready for the mission Christ places before us. Create a clean heart in me, O God!
