Suicide and Robin Williams

The unfortunate news of the suicide of Robin Williams has brought much discussion of suicide to the fore. Suicide is an uncomfortable topic to discuss, nonetheless we shouldn’t be afraid of raising awareness and reaching out to someone who might be in need/crisis. The devil tells us to think of suicide and lose hope. That is a lie. Hope comes from God and cannot be taken away. The Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it thus: “We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives” (#2283).

Robin’s suicide deeply saddens me. I can’t imagine the pain he must have been in to do such a drastic act. RIP sweet Robin. 🙁
