Our Lord teaches us a subtle lesson in humility in today’s Gospel. As God, Jesus is exempt from paying the temple tax, but he doesn’t insist on not paying the tax. Our Lord humbly submits and manifests his divinity at the same time. Paying the tax shows his humility. That the tax was paid with coins miraculously found in the mouth of fish, shows his divinity. For us the question is: how often do we insist on special treatment or refuse to bear graciously the minor mistreatment of others? True humility demands that we not expect the best for ourselves while giving the minimum to others. Lord Jesus, teach us true humility!
