Snow is again falling in Massachusetts. I bet we will end up with a foot of the white stuff in front of the rectory. took these “phone photos” in Boston during the snow storm last week. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I love the snow–I don’t even mind shoveling it!
Perhaps you have heard the title of the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of the Snows. This title is traced back to the foundation of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. According to legend there was a wealthy couple without heirs, who prayed to Our Lady as to how they should dispose of their wealth. At night they received a vision of Our Lady telling them to build a church in her honor. According to the legend that same night snow fell covering the hill where the basilica was to be built–in the middle of summer! Regardless of the historicity of the legend, a church has stood on that hill in Rome for over 1600 years. Devotion to Our Lady had stood the test of time. Each of us should continue to give Our Lady the honor of our prayers everyday!
