Thursday of the First Week of Advent

Stir up your power, O Lord, and come to our help with mighty strength, that what our sins impede the grace of your mercy may hasten. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Many writers acknowledge that there are only two movements in the spiritual life: toward God or toward sin. This should seem obvious enough, but the subtle point to remember is that we cannot stand still in the spiritual life; to stand still is to step back. These two movements are acknowledged in today’s prayer: sin impedes and mercy hastens. The goal is for us to move quickly to Our Lord (by this I mean growth in virtue/holiness). A good way to progress in our moving to the Lord is by daily examination of consciousness and frequent confession. At the end of today, why not ask yourself this question: what have I done today that has hindered my following of Jesus?
