The collect (opening prayer) from today’s Mass:
Keep us alert, we pray, O Lord our God, as we await the advent of Christ your Son, so that, when he comes and knocks, he may find us watchful in prayer and exultant in his praise. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Today’s prayer is rich with allusions to Sacred Scripture. This prayer calls to mind the experience of the disciples who fell asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night of Our Lord’s arrest. In light of the disciples’ failure to remain awake for “one hour” (Matthew 26:40), we need to recognize that we need more than our own efforts to stay faithful to the Lord; we need the gift of grace. Also, the image of Christ coming and knocking calls to mind Our Lord’s message to the churches in the third chapter of Revelation. This shows us that Jesus waits for us to welcome Him into our hearts; Jesus never forces Himself into a heart where He is not welcomed. We cannot even glimpse at the joy Our Lord will have for/with us if we die in His friendship! May Jesus find us waiting for Him.
