“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.” Luke 10:2
What is the harvest of which our Blessed Lord speaks? A harvest of souls–souls for the Kingdom! This amounts to about forty thousand in Billerica. Forty thousand people made for the Kingdom. No one excluded, everyone included. Jesus Christ offered himself as a sacrifice for all peoples. He is the only way. “There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12).
What happens to a harvest which is not gathered? It wilts and dies. This is why laborers are needed–men and women of faith empowered by the Sacraments–to witness in the community. We cannot hide from our mission. The Light of Faith, received at Baptism, is not meant to stay hidden under a bushel basket. In our families, workplaces, and civic organizations we need to be beacons–beacons that point to where the Light of Faith can be received: the local parish. The local parish is the ordinary location where faith is received, nurtured, and brought to maturity in Christ.
Let us pray that the Lord send more laborers to gather the harvest!
